CPS Releases New Elementary Scorecards

Parents reminded that deadline for magnet schools,

magnet programs, and selective enrollment schools is Dec.22

Following in the success of the high school scorecards last year, Chicago Public Schools unveiled similar scorecards for every elementary school in the district on Monday, which include information on student-teacher ratio, teacher attendance, academic programs, and test scores data.

The scorecards are contained in the 2007-08 Elementary and Pre-K Directory, which is now available in both English and Spanish at every elementary school, CPS central office at 125 S. Clark, public libraries, park district buildings, day-care centers and elected officials’ offices.

High school scorecards with similar information were first released last year. The new elementary scorecard was unveiled in a news conference at Talcott Elementary School, 1840 W. Ohio St.

“These scorecards are just another step in our efforts to provide parents and the community with as much information as possible, so they can make thoughtful decisions about where to send their children,” CPS Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan said. “At the same time, they’re a vehicle for schools and school leaders themselves to think about where their own school stands, what its strengths are and what needs improvement.”

Like the high school scorecards, the elementary scorecards will have information next year on “Student Connection” at each school, based on surveys of middle-grade students. The surveys will reflect student opinions on areas such as extracurricular activities, safe and respectful school climate and whether or not the school has high expectations for students. It will also include information on parent participation, based on parent surveys.

Duncan on Monday also mentioned that the application deadline for magnet schools, magnet programs, and selective enrollment schools is Friday, Dec. 22. All applications must be postmarked by Dec. 22. “ So far, we ’ re seeing an increase in the number of applications received this year compared to this time last year, ” Duncan said. “ We want to encourage as many families as possible to take advantage of these outstanding programs. ”

The Chicago Public Schools is the nation ’ s third-largest school system. It includes more than 600 schools and serves about 415,000 students.
