DR. DONALD R. PITTMAN, Chief Officer Our Mission Statement The Office of High Schools and High School Programs (OHSP) provides leadership, support and technical assistance to high schools and extended elementary schools in order to promote improved student and school performance. OHSP emphasizes the dual principles of academic press and personalization, which together promote student achievement, in all programs and initiatives.
Goals Our overall goal is to ensure that all high school students have the opportunity to be engaged in a variety of learning experiences which will enable them to graduate well prepared for any post secondary option, i.e. college, employment, or military or technical training. For under-performing students, our goal is to decrease course failure rates, decrease dropout rates, and increase graduation rates via targeted support strategies for both students and schools. We seek to ensure that students are motivated and prepared to pursue higher education or challenging employment via advanced academic programs, career preparation programs, and college test preparation. OHSP is comprised the above reference departments to ensure the accomplishment of its mission.
History In recent years, the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has focused many of its reform initiatives on improving the overall quality of its high schools. The Board of Education and the CPS management team have always maintained that the success of the entire school system will depend largely on the success of the high schools. Being cognizant of that challenge, the Office of High Schools and High School Programs was formed July 1, 1999. Different units, departments, and initiatives, which were already serving the high schools, were brought together under the leadership of the OHSP with the intent to consolidate and bring uniformity to high school programs, policies and initiatives. Within these departments many programs, initiatives, opportunities, and services are generated and made available to high schools and extended elementary schools. Since the needs of all students are taken into consideration, the programs and services vary to best accommodate those needs. For under-performing students, support strategies were developed to decrease failure and drop out rates and increase graduation rates. For high performing students, enrichment and advanced academic programs were made available. Because of our high ideals, the demand for accountability for all constituents is stressed, along with the consequences when known standards are not achieved. OHSP is here to serve all constituents, board members, administrators, heads of departments; principals, teachers, students, and parents.
