What is CPS Real Men Read?
- CPS Real Men Read is a male mentoring opportunity at the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) sponsored by Chase. Each mentor commits to reading with the same classroom of students and leading a reading discussion for one hour, once a month, from January 2007 through May 2007.
What is the purpose of CPS Real Men Read?
- CPS Real Men Read has a four-fold purpose: 1) To demonstrate to students that real men do in fact read and that real men value education. 2) To encourage and improve literacy skills among CPS students. 3) To provide mentoring opportunities for men with CPS students. 4) To raise awareness of the importance of student achievement and community partnerships.
What schools will CPS Real Men Read serve?
- For the 2006-2007 school year, CPS Real Men Read will primarily serve elementary schools in the communities of North Lawndale, South Lawndale and Englewood.
What types of books and training will CPS Real Men Read provide?
- CPS Real Men Read will offer a selection of culturally relevant and grade appropriate books. CPS Real Men Read will also offer all mentors with materials on reading to students and leading a reading discussion.
- Students who participate in CPS Real Men Read will receive summer reading books to maintain the enthusiasm and skills they obtained during the in-classroom program.
