What is an Achievement Academy? An ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMY is a two-year secondary school program developed for over-aged students who have not met the promotion criteria to enter high school. The achievement Academies (AA) programs are a collaborative effort between Chicago Public Schools and Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore Maryland. The academies are located in eight existing high schools, CVCA Clemente, Crane Englewood, Fenger, Robeson, Senn and Tilden.
Through the implementation of the nationally recognized Talent Development High Schools (TDHS) model, developed by Hopkins, the academies foster a positive school climate and provide instructional innovations to successfully transition students into high school academics. Teachers work in collaborative teams which are committed to academic achievement of their students. Also, student advocates are assigned to each academy to work with students to resolve non-instructional issues, such as those related to attendance and behavior. Ongoing professional development for teachers and staff is provided to support implementation of the recommended instructional program and unique organizational structures.
We believe personalization (with a healthy dose of “nagging and nurturing”) is a key factor to meeting the needs of academy students in a friendly but firm environment. The Achievement Academies strive to create a relevant, rigorous instructional program where teaching and learning is clearly defined by high student engagement.
